Use this planning guide to prepare photographs and questions for the supplier and installer. The required projection, support and finishing details depend on the chosen assembly and property.

A bay commonly combines a larger central window with angled side windows. A bow uses several sections arranged in a curve. The number of sections, operating windows, projection and sightlines depend on the design you order.

Record the existing wall and opening
Photograph the opening from inside and outside, including the surrounding wall, sill, roof or overhang and nearby obstructions. Note whether you are replacing a projecting assembly or changing a flat window to a different shape.
Ask the installer or responsible project professional to assess the opening, load support and weatherproofing requirements. A new header, roof detail or support system may be needed, but those requirements cannot be established from the style name alone. Confirm required approvals with the relevant local authority.
Check the room layout and usable ledge
Sketch furniture, blinds, heating outlets and the intended use of the space. Confirm actual interior and exterior projection on the proposed drawing. Avoid assuming that every bay provides a usable seat or every bow has a shallow projection.
If you want seating, storage or plants beside the window, discuss the intended use and any additional loads with the project professional. Leave access for operating hardware, cleaning and maintenance.
