The lower sash moves vertically and the upper sash stays fixed. Plan access for cleaning the fixed exterior glass.

One sash slides horizontally beside a fixed section. The opening stays within the frame, which helps where an outward sash would obstruct a walkway.

Picture vs. high-fix windows

Picture

A fixed window provides a view and daylight without an operable sash. It does not supply ventilation or an escape opening.

Consider it when: You want fixed glass and have addressed ventilation elsewhere in the room.

High-fix is a product option, not a requirement to mount the window high on a wall. Compare drawings and glass sightlines before choosing between fixed styles.

Compare ratings for the configuration you will buy

Ask for certified whole-product U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) for the selected size, frame and glass package. Lower U-factor means less heat transfer; SHGC describes how much solar heat passes through. Match the ratings to your climate and project requirements.

A style name, series name or pane count does not establish ENERGY STAR certification or a guaranteed energy saving. Compare the actual product ratings and quote, including any changes caused by your glass selection.

Check the opening, access and safety requirements

Have your installer verify the ordered frame size, rough opening, installation allowances and any emergency-escape requirements before purchase. A bedroom or basement location does not make a particular style or nominal size suitable automatically.

A window screen does not prevent a child from falling. Upper-sash ventilation is not a child-safety rating. Review appropriate fall-prevention measures and emergency access for the room, and plan safe access for cleaning fixed and operable glass.

Common questions

Are casement windows better than double-hung windows?

They serve different priorities. A casement opens outward with a crank and has no horizontal meeting rail. A double-hung window operates vertically within the frame and lets you open either sash. Compare clearance, cleaning access and certified ratings for the actual models.

What is the difference between single- and double-hung windows?

A single-hung window has a moving lower sash and a fixed upper section. Both sashes move in a double-hung window. Confirm tilt-in features and cleaning instructions for the product you select.

Do double sliders open the entire window?
