Replacement window glass, made to size

A replacement insulated glass unit is the sealed glass assembly that fits inside a compatible window sash or frame. It does not include a new window frame, sash, operator or installation. Start by confirming whether your existing window can accept replacement glass.

Glass size and frame size are different.

Have a glazier confirm the manufactured glass-unit dimensions and thickness. The visible glass opening alone is not an ordering size.

Glass replacement or a complete window?

Replace the glass unit

Consider glass-only replacement when the glass is the problem and the sash, frame and glazing system remain suitable. Have a glazier confirm that the unit can be removed and replaced, and identify the exact glass specification.

Configure a sealed glass unit

Replace the complete window

If the frame or sash is damaged, the window does not operate properly, or you want a different opening style, compare a complete replacement window. New glass alone does not repair those parts.

Compare complete windows

Identify the problem first

Photograph the whole window, the glass edge and any product labels. Explain whether the concern is damaged glass, moisture, operation or the frame. Send the information for review before committing to a made-to-order size.

Send photos and measurements

The measurements a replacement unit needs

Visible glass, the complete sealed-unit size and the window frame size are different measurements. Confirm the manufactured glass-unit width and height with your glazier. Do not order from the visible daylight opening alone or apply a universal deduction.

Match the overall sealed-unit thickness, pane count, individual glass thicknesses and shape to the existing glazing system. The unit must fit the sash and its glazing components. For a shaped unit, confirm the full geometry, orientation and any required template before manufacturing.

Choose the glass package that fits the window

Use the Panes sealed-unit configurator to review the supported dimensions and available glass, coating and related options. Confirm the complete specification against the existing unit and your project requirements before approving the order.

A replacement Low-E glass unit does not automatically give the existing window a new whole-window rating or certification. Compare available glass data and discuss compatibility with your installer. Double-pane and triple-pane units are not interchangeable simply because their width and height match.

What changes the replacement-glass price?

The price depends on dimensions, shape, pane count, glass thickness, coatings and the selected options. Configure your actual unit to review its current price. Compare the same glass specification when reviewing quotes.

Keep removal, installation, glazing materials, freight and tax separate from the glass-unit price. Confirm production timing, packaging, receiving arrangements and the delivery charge for your address before ordering. Window or door production estimates should not be assumed to apply to a replacement glass order.

Your glass-order checklist

  • Quantity and an opening reference for each unit
  • Confirmed manufactured width and height, or shaped-unit dimensions
  • Overall unit thickness and individual glass thicknesses
  • Pane count, coating, glass type and any required safety glazing
  • Photos, product labels and existing grilles or spacer details
  • Delivery address and the glazier responsible for fitting the unit

Replacement-glass questions

Can I replace just the glass instead of the whole window?

Sometimes. A glazier should confirm that the frame, sash and glazing system are sound and accept a replacement insulated glass unit. Glass-only replacement does not repair damaged frames, operating hardware or installation problems.

Is an insulated glass unit the same as a window pane?

A pane is one sheet of glass. An insulated glass unit combines separated panes into a sealed assembly. A complete window also includes its frame and, where applicable, sash and operating hardware. Confirm which item your quote includes.

Should I measure only the glass I can see?

No. Visible glass dimensions are not necessarily the manufactured unit dimensions. Ask your glazier to confirm the unit width, height, overall thickness and glazing requirements before ordering.

Can I upgrade a double-pane window to triple-pane glass?

Only if the existing window system supports the proposed unit thickness, weight and glazing arrangement. Matching width and height alone is not enough. Have the complete replacement specification checked before ordering.

Does fogging mean I need a complete new window?

The location of the moisture matters. Moisture on an exposed glass surface and moisture between panes are different issues. Have the window assessed; the condition of its glass unit, frame and sash determines the appropriate repair or replacement.
