Start with the product and the existing opening
List the windows you want to replace and photograph the frame, sill, interior trim and exterior finish. Panes window quotes are for custom vinyl products, so identify the required material if your plans specify a different system. Ask your installer to determine the replacement method and check any proposed substitution against the project requirements. Final sizes should be approved before manufacturing.

Des Plaines provides a digital application portal for building permits and contractor registration. Contact Building and Permits about your window or door scope, including opening changes, related remodeling and the property type. Confirm who will handle applications and inspections with your contractor. Use the City’s current instructions for submission rather than relying on paperwork from a different project or municipality.

Use consistent dimensions, quantities, operation, glass, colors and hardware when comparing prices. Ask for the performance information for each selected window configuration. An online product price is useful for comparing options; the full project also depends on delivery, taxes and the installation and finishing work included. Identify removal, trim, exterior finishing and disposal separately so the scope is clear.

Photograph the entire entry assembly, including the frame, sidelites, transom and threshold. Record swing direction, hardware, glass privacy and finishes. For a sliding patio door, include the panel configuration, opening direction and access for delivery. Ask the installer how the surrounding wall and trim will be finished, particularly when changing the arrangement or dimensions.

Provide the window and door schedule with opening tags, quantities and matching elevations. Mark fixed glazing and ventilation windows, finishes and the required frame and glass specifications. Share revisions before the order is released, and agree with the builder who approves dimensions and receives delivery. The product quote and the construction work scope should identify their respective responsibilities.
